54-year-old arrest record triggers civil rights memories

Last week, a single arrest record from 1970 resurfaced, to shed light on a largely forgotten chapter of Monroe’s civil rights history.

The revelation came two weeks ago when Roosevelt Wright Jr., publisher of the Free Press, and former Civil Rights activist, applied for a concealed carry permit.

Wright, now 76, was 21 years old at the time, served as the coordinator of the “Black Youth Council” in 1970. Recently, he was denied a concealed carry permit due to a lone arrest record dated July 3, 1970, for “Disturbing the Peace,” which had been dropped.

“I didn’t know it existed, but I’m happy that there is a piece of paper somewhere that proves something happened in the summer of 1970,” said Wright.
