Youth violence is a serious concern throughout the United States and there is no sign of reducing it. In our local community, each and every day there are reports through the media that horrible crimes are occuring. Youth crimes are also occurring daily and never reported. Recently, a young middle school student was killed because of a disagreement and family members are left behind grieving. In addition, a huge fight broke out at a recent movie theater involving youth and was captured on video.
So, what is the solution to reduce these violent crimes? Mentoring, apprenticeship, and Leadership programs are needed to support our youth and should be sustainable and not just a one time event. Monroe City School Superintendent Sam Moore, who is doing a good job and school board members, are challenged to utilize the auditorium at local schools to not only talk to our youth but also engage them where we listen to what they have to say. Faith -based communities, clubs and organizations should get on the same page to support this effort. It is often said that it takes a village to raise a child. We have to quit criticizing parents each time a child is involved in criminal activities. The current environment is such that peer pressures have become overwhelming and it is difficult for parents to always be in their presence. When society can gain control of youth violence and start seeing a reduction in our communities, we can Love where we Live and Live where we Love.
