Everyone needs encouragement

By Rusty Potter

One of the greatest gifts we can give another person costs nothing.  It has a priceless value.  That gift is encouragement.

Sometimes we think encouragement is only for people who are facing illness or financial hardship or personal problems.  The truth is, encouragement is for everyone.  Every person you meet is carrying a burden you may never see.  Some are struggling with health issues, some are grieving the loss of a loved one, some are worried about paying bills, and others are simply trying to make it through another day.

That’s why I say: “You never have to wonder who needs encouragement.  Look around.  If they’re living, they need it.”

Encouragement has the power to change someone’s day – and sometimes even their life.  A kind word can restore hope.  A sincere compliment can remind someone that they matter.  We may never know much another person needs to hear: ” I believe in you,” or Hang in there.”

I’ve learned that some of the strongest – looking people are often fighting the hardest battles.  The person who greets you with a smile may have cried the night before.  The coworker who always seems positive may be carrying a heavy load at home.  That’s why we should never underestimate the impact of encouragement.

Imagine what would happen if each of us made it our mission to encourage just one person every day.  Families would grow stronger.  Friendships would deepen.  Workplaces would become more positive.  Communities would become places where people feel seen, valued, and appreciated.

Encouragement doesn’t run out.  The more you give away, the more it seems to multiply.  When you lift someone else, you often find your own spirit lifted as well.

Today, be intentional.  Send the text.  Make the phone call.  Shake a hand.  Offer a compliment.  Tell someone you appreciate them.  Your words may become the very strength they need to keep moving forward.

We are all traveling this journey of life together.  So don’t wait for someone to ask for encouragement.  Give it freely, generously, and often.  You never know whose life you might change with just a few sincere words.

Because if they’re living, they need it.
