Thirty-nine years ago, the first Black History parade rolled down Desisard Street with one band and less than 10 cars, but Mary Bryant, a youth, and the late Emily P. Robinson had a dream of promoting Black history through a parade.
People laughed at the parade that was so small that it only took up one lane of Desiard Street and proceeded in the driving snow.
Fast forward 39 years. The Black History parade is one of the largest Black Heritage events of the year that features hundreds of entries, over 100 floats, and thousands of spectators.
