The Monroe City School Board voted Tuesday not to sponsor Neville High School’s application to become a Type 3 charter school. The decision came during a special meeting where only four of the seven board members voted, resulting in a split decision with two voting for and two against the charter, while one member abstained.
Micheal Sampognaro and Bill Willson voted for the Charter, and Brenda Shelling and Betty Ward Cooper voted against it. Board member Jennifer Haneline abstained, and members: Darryl Berry and Brandon Johnson were absent.
Stewart Shelby, president of the Neville Charter Association (NCA), said the organization will now pursue a Type 2 charter through the state’s Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE).
