Regular Monroe bus fares will go up starting January 2018, but not as much as the city wanted. That was the decision of the Monroe City Council on Tuesday night when members approved a cut in the fare increase the city asked for by half, and left most fees the same.
The need to raise bus revenue has always been a hot potato for city councilmembers since Southside riders depend on the buses for transportation to Northside jobs.
For ten years the city has not had a substantial bus fare increase because the council views the bus service as a quality of life service for those who lack transportation due to lack of resources.
