For generations, Carroll High School has stood as a beacon of achievement, resilience, and pride, but something troubling is happening.
Founded on an unwavering standard of excellence by former enslaved individuals who recognized education as the ultimate catalyst for progress, Carroll’s legacy is woven deep into the fabric of our community.
Its Alma Mater boldly proclaims the school as “a mighty force in this great nation.” Yet, over the last five years, a relentless drumbeat of troubling headlines has left students, alumni, and supporters grappling with heartbreak, frustration, and an unsettling sense of drift.
The trail of dismal news has become impossible to ignore.
In 2022, football coaching suspensions followed a conflict in Franklin Parish.
The following year brought tragedy when a life was lost in a street party following a Carroll Homecoming game when the police left thousands without security.
Add to this a continuous cycle of abrupt coach firings, band director resignations, student walkouts, recurring issues surrounding Homecoming elections and the Carroll-ettes, and last week’s disturbing conduct reported among football players and coaches at Assumption High School. We may never know who was at fault in the Assumption incident, or who started it, but we do see our beloved school taking the brunt of the negative fallout.
Most alarming of all is the academic reality highlighted by this year’s state reporting: 92 percent of Carroll students are performing below mastery in core subjects. No matter how officials try to spin it, the bottom line is that the school that once bragged about its long list of merit scholars is now listed among those at the very bottom in core subject performance.
It is easy for administrators to treat these incidents as isolated blips—unfortunate, disconnected events to be managed case by case. But when you compare the overwhelming volume of conflict, drama, and negative press associated with Carroll over the last five years to that of surrounding high schools, the pattern is undeniable.
Something fundamental is misaligned. While no single individual bears the sole blame for this decline, those entrusted with the school’s stewardship cannot evade responsibility for the culture that has allowed it to continue.
The love and respect this community holds for Carroll High School, its dedicated teachers, and its hard-working students remain steadfast. That devotion is precisely why silence is no longer an option.
School district leaders stay silent whenever an issue involving Carroll surfaces. They hide behind text messages and emails promising to investigate, but never reveal the results. The crisis facing Carroll cannot be text-messaged away, nor can public anxiety be soothingly managed through polished press releases and vague email blasts.
Superficial responses diminish the urgency of the moment and disrespect the legacy of those who built this institution.
School district leadership, community stakeholders, alumni, and school administration must sit down together, acknowledge the full scope of the problem, and institute comprehensive, systemic changes.
Carroll High School’s rich history demands more than quiet damage control—it requires bold leadership, clear accountability, and an unyielding commitment to restoring the excellence that “a mighty force” truly represents.
