City council must decide renaming street after Troy X Cade

The Monroe City Council will be asked to override a decision by the Monroe Planning Commission by renaming a historic site after a man the Monroe Police tried to hang over 60 years ago.

Wyatt X Wilson, asked the planning commission to rename the short street 10th and DeSiard to Washington Street as Troy X Cade Street.

Wilson said Cade came to Monroe in 1960 and began meeting in the Miller Roy Building teaching Black awareness to Monroe Blacks. A year later the Monroe Police Chief and 30 armed police officers, broke into the worship service of the local Black Muslim temple and beat Cade, as well as men, pregnant women, and children.
