City council pulls plug on planned water rate increase pending review

The Monroe City Council has voted against a proposed ordinance to increase water and sewerage rates, despite concerns about the city’s bond rating. Council members, particularly those representing the Southside, are determined to find alternative ways to cover rising costs without burdening residents with higher utility bills.

Council’s Decision

In a 3-2 vote, the council rejected the proposed 2.7% increase to all water rates. Council members Rodney McFarland, Verbon Muhammad, and Juanita Woods voted against the rate hike, while Gretchen Ezernack and Doug Harvey supported it.
