Black groups have joined the grieving family of David Harris who died while in police custody Saturday, resulting calls for an independent investigation and autopsy.
The city’s refusal to explain the death prompted an immediate response from the local NAACP and several leaders of the Nation of Islam who held a press conference Wednesday at the Alabama Street incident site.
Rev. Ambrose Douzart, president of the Ouachita NAACP, and Verbon Muhammad leader of the local study group of the Nation of Islam, slammed the city for another suspicious death involving city police without any public response from the city.
During the Mayo Administration, the city was silent when five officers shot William Henderson 17 times after a motorist said he was acting erratically. The Administration never apologized and fought against efforts to award damages to Henderson’s children.
