Cooper, Shelling say parents complaining about Eureka math system

Eureka Math? If you’ve never heard of it by name, you may know it as the new way of doing math that is so frustrating that many parents can’t help their children at home.

School Board members Betty Cooper and Brenda Shelling have raised the issue of the effectiveness of the new system of teaching math that is causing so many students to perform poorly in math in the city system.

For thousands of years, students have learned math by memorizing timetables and steps to achieve a result. In the traditional method, following the steps to get an answer is emphasized. It includes operations, theorems, and postulates, as well as learning facts.
