Next year the position of mayor of Monroe will get a $40,000 raise to $68 per hour. City council members will get a raise, too; they will get a $6,000 raise to $750 per meeting. That was the decision of a divided Monroe City Council Tuesday night as it voted 3-2 to increase salaries for the Mayor and council members beginning in July 2024.
The raises can only take effect after the next city council election in March of next year.
The Council’s senior members: Gretchen Ezenak and Juanita Woods, were opposed to the size of the raises proposed for council members.
Ezernak said council members all have other jobs and were aware of what the position paid when they ran for the office.
