Council introduces $50 million plan for Echols’ hotel downtown

“Micheal Echols has found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, and it’s on Walnut Street,” was the way Tony Little, President of the Southside Economic Development District, summarized the city’s plan to put up more than $50 million to help Rep. Micheal Echols build a hotel and other investments in downtown Monroe.

Tuesday night, the council introduced for the first reading an ordinance that would ratify a cooperative agreement between the City and Walnut Steet Economic Development District that would allow the district to impose a 2 percent sales tax within the district for 20 years.
