Court orders redo of Caddo Sheriff race; black judges dissent

The verdict of a judge ordering a new election for the Louisiana sheriff’s race, which was decided by a single vote, has been affirmed by a racially divided state appeals court.

The Second Circuit Court of Appeal in Shreveport, Louisiana, ruled 3-2 on Tuesday against Republican John Nickelson, who was running for sheriff of Caddo Parish. Nickelson’s evidence included two voters who had cast two unlawful ballots and four voters who were not allowed to vote.

Furthermore, the majority concluded that the lower court judge’s conclusion that Nickelson could not have been aware of the problematic votes prior to election day was correct.
