Ellis retires, Reggie Brown is interim police chief

Chief Eugene Ellis has announced his abrupt retirement plans, and his interim replacement has already been decided.

Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo announced Wednesday that Ellis, who only served two years as chief is retiring, and the interim chief will be Department information officer Reggie Brown.

Ellis’ tenure is effective Feb. 1, 2020.

Ellis will round out a 33-year career with the department.

He was named chief in 2018. Among the chief applicants for the job then was Reggie Brown. Brown sued the Civil Service Board when it refused to allow him to take the Chief’s exam. He was eventually allowed to take the exam and passed, but Mayo hired Ellis.

An outstanding lawsuit between Brown over legal fees in the Board’s illegal denial action is still pending in the local courts.
