A 74-year-old Monroe resident who spent the past year warning officials about dangerous conditions at the Powell Community Center parking lot became a victim of those very hazards Monday night.
Joslyn Marie Wright, co-owner of the Monroe Free Press, sustained injuries after falling in a pothole she had repeatedly complained about to city officials. The incident occurred as she was leaving a “Black Tie Guys” meeting at the center.
“Sooner or later some of these girls are going to get grabbed because of the lack of lighting. Somebody’s going to fall in one of these potholes,” Wright had previously warned officials, documenting her concerns through regular Facebook posts about inadequate lighting and deteriorating parking lot conditions.
On the night of the incident, Wright was forced to park far from the sidewalk, an area she typically avoided due to numerous potholes. As she attempted to navigate what she described as a “minefield of potholes” to reach her car, her flat-heeled shoe caught in one of the depressions, causing her to fall face-first. Fellow community center visitors had to use their car headlights to help those assisting Wright after her fall.
