Attorney Frederick Jones says he will be a candidate for State Representative in the October elections.
Jones confirmed Sunday that he and his wife have decided to “throw my hat in the ring,” for the District 16 House of Representative seat being vacated by Rep. Katrina Jackson who is now running for the Senate seat once held by Charles D. Jones, Fred’s father.
Jones is the only attorney that has announced for the seat, two others have noted their intentions.
The Jones Family has a history of legislative prowess that began with the election of Charles D. Jones as state representative for District 17. His sister, Rosalind Jones served a successful and productive term before marrying and moving out of state.
Charles D. Jones was later elected as Senator for District 34 and used his influence to pass hundreds of laws that changed the state judicial system and began a needed reformation of the criminal justice system in the state.
It is the Jones family influence that was, in part, responsible for legislation that set up guaranteed districts that resulted in the election of Black district and municipal judges across the state.
The Jones family, through father and daughter, were prominent in the legislative Black caucus and lobbied for grants, programs, and initiatives that helped the state, but the poor and minorities particularly.
Jones is expected to officially announce his candidacy later this week.
