Homecoming block party leaves 1 dead, five wounded

The ER at St. Francis Hospital went into Mass Shooting lock down mode. Bullets were flying everywhere. No police were anywhere to be found! One youth is dead, five are wounded. City gives no answers for lack of police presence for a traditional crowd gathering where thousands were expected.

When Carroll High School celebrates its homecoming, thousands are expected every year for the game and the unofficial block party. Last year, there were shots fired. This year, there was a mass shooting that resulted in death and injuries.

It happened on October 21st, after the school’s homecoming game off campus. Gunfire erupted at a block party on Renwick Street, leaving a 14-year-old dead and several others injured. The block party is an unofficial after-party that just happens every year during homecoming week. It is not sanctioned or sponsored by the school.

“My son didn’t have to die”

Fourteen-year-old Dontavius Wilson, a former Bastrop resident whose family moved to Monroe seeking refuge from violence, was caught in the hail of bullets and tragically lost his life. Wilson had attended the block party with a friend. He was a vibrant part of the Carroll High School community, sharing camaraderie and athleticism as a member of the school’s sports teams.

Wilson’s mother has started a gofundme account to raise $5,000 toward his funeral expenses. On Fundme she wrote: “My eldest, my son, Dontavius aka Buba, has been taken from me due to senseless gun violence. He was only 14 years old. Buba was a kind and respectful child. He loved his family, video games, being stylish, and like most boys his age, he was a lady’s man. My son did not deserve to be taken from us the way he was. I miss him so much and would give anything to have my child back. This is a tragedy that I wouldn’t wish on anyone.”
