In first 100 days “Brown Bombers” make waves, policy changes

In a display of solidarity and commitment to campaign promises, Monroe’s City Council, particularly the Southside members called “The Brown Bombers,” has made significant strides in their first 100 days in office. Their efforts have largely focused on bringing South Monroe and African-American interests to the forefront of city policymaking.

Water Rate Reform: A Major Victory

The council’s most notable achievement has been the unanimous passage of Ordinance #12242, which overhauls the city’s water rate system. This new ordinance replaces the previous practice of automatic annual increases, instituted during the Mayo Administration, with a mandatory annual review process. The change requires the Mayor to submit a detailed report on the water system’s financial condition and proposed rates by December 31st each year, with the City Council required to vote on any rate changes within 30 days.

Since 2018, the water rates have increased each May 1st without a review or vote of the city council.
