Ivey Handy funeral set for Saturday at Logtown

Funeral services for a well known-church personality, Ivey Handy, will be held Saturday, June 17, at 2 p.m. at the Logtown Baptist Church

Mrs. Handy, 83, died on June 8th.

Her obituary reads as follows:

Sister Ivey May White Handy was born February 18, 1940, in Chepstow, Portland, Jamaica to the late Albert White, and Lillian Moore White. She came to the Baptist faith by way of the Catholic church and was baptized at the Zion Hill Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend H. Y. Franklin.

She later joined with her husband at Logtown Baptist Church, under the leadership of the late Reverend H. S. Staten, where she remained faithful until her passing. As a devoted member of Logtown, she served on the usher board for many years, and she was a dedicated teacher to the Primary class, where she loved fulfilling her passion, working with children.

Ivey received her early education through the Jamaica School System. After graduating high school, she went to London, England, and enrolled in Nursing School. Thereafter, she worked for a few years in the healthcare system in London, England, and later relocated to Canada. Ivey and LeRoy Handy became penpals and began corresponding long distances. After a few years, they were engaged and wedded in holy matrimony on June 29, 1969. To this Union came the birth of their Son, DeWayne Anthony Handy on September 26, 1970. Prior to the birth of her son, Ivey was employed at Georgia Street Nursing Home. After his birth, one year later, she worked at the Saint Francis Medical Center in the Pediatric Unit for twenty-eight years.

Ivey leaves to cherish her memories her loving husband, Leroy Handy of 54 years; one son, DeWayne Handy (Genisha), Frisco, TX; adopted son, Darius K. Stewart, Monroe, LA; a niece who was like a daughter, Caroline H. Mathis, Monroe, LA; four grandchildren, Imani and Imari Handy, Aubry, TX, DeWayne Jr.(DJ) and Drew Handy, Frisco, TX; two sisters, Herma Green, Ontario, Canada, Vernice Barnes (Paralto), Palm Bay, FL; two cousins she claims as her brother and sister, David Moore, Port St. Lucie, FL, and Lorna Moore, Ocala, FL; two sisters-in-law, Georgia Mae Handy and Bridget Handy of Monroe, LA; one aunt, Louise Moore Jackson, Ocala, FL; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

She is preceded in death by brothers Sydney White and Leslie Shaw of Montego Bay, Jamaica; and sister, Norma Duncan, of Brooklyn, NY.
