Local Gospel Music legend, Leatrice Morrison, dead at 87

Leatrice Dunn Morrison, the first chapter representative of the local chapter of the Gospel Music Workshop of America, died Sunday at the age of 87.

Morrison, a Monroe native, was well known as a church musician in the Monroe community before her retirement.

She served as the church musician at the New Tabernacle Baptist Church for decades as well as New Antioch and others.

In 1985, Morrison was named the first chapter representative for the local chapter of the Gospel Music Workshop of America, a chapter she helped organize.

The late Rev. James Cleveland came to Monroe to install her as its first chapter representative.
