Low turnout among blacks could spell victory for Ellis Saturday

Will Friday Ellis win another term as Mayor of Monroe, or will 19-year veteran Jamie Mayo pull off an upset and reclaim the mayor’s seat? Will Betty Cooper, a school board member, trade her school board seat for the Mayor’s seat? What will be the fate of incumbents Gretchen Ezernak in District 2, Carday Marshall in District 4 and Kema Dawson in District 5? Will they be able to hold off challengers and resume their city council roles?



It will all unfold Saturday as voters in Monroe, Richwood, and the rest of the state go to the polls in a primary election to elect local officials—and, by the way, also elect a presidential nominee.
