Major Mary Ann Tellis has been named assistant chief of police for the City of Monroe.
The appointment was announced Thursday by Chief of Police Victor Zordan.
It marks the second time that a woman has held the top ranks in the Monroe Police Department. In 2003, Evelyn Robinson was named interim chief of police but refused consideration as the permanent chief because of family concerns.
Tellis received 18 letters of recommendation for the appointment, according to Chief Zordan.
Major Tellis has climbed the department’s ranks from serving as a record clerk in 1988 and then transferred to patrol duty the same year.
In her first year on patrol, she was named the 1988 Outstanding Young Officer of the year.
