On June 28, 2017, a Monroe Police officer arrested Johnny Lee Cooper, Jr. and charged him with domestic abuse battery and child endangerment. According to Cooper, the mother of his child left the kids unattended and he was not happy.
The officer was dispatched to 1908 Cagle Dr. in reference to a domestic battery. Upon arrival, the officer observed a black female and a black male identified as Johnny Cooper, in the front yard. The officer separated the two and made contact with the female who stated prior to the officer’s arrival, she had to walk down the road to get groceries and left the children with her grandmother at the residence. She said when she returned she saw Cooper sitting on the front porch and he approached her, grabbing her right arm.
According to the officer, the woman advised him that they started a verbal altercation and Cooper had her by the arm pulling her into the residence. She stated when they were both in the living room, Cooper started to push her around while her child was in the living room. She advised that Cooper put his hands on her neck but was only pushing her and he never restricted her airway. The officer looked at the woman but didn’t observe any marks on her.
The officer then went to Cooper and advised him of his Miranda Rights prior to questioning. Cooper stated that he received a phone call stating that the woman had left the kids with the grandmother who was sick and unable to watch the kids. He said he came over to the residence and found that the woman had left and the grandmother was in the back bedroom still in the bed while the kids were running around. He said he was angry on the matter and when the woman came back he approached her and did grab her by the arm pulling her into the residence.
Cooper said that he did push her while they were in the living room. He said he has anger issues and it was in the heat of the moment when he pushed her.
The officer arrested Cooper (double locked and checked for tightness) and placed him in the patrol car. The woman and Cooper had lived together for a year, three years ago. According to the officer, they also have an infant child together. Cooper was transported to OCC and booked on a charge of domestic abuse battery and child endangerment.
