Memorial service held for James Gibson, 61

Memorial services were held last week for Army veteran James Henry who died unexpectedly.

The memorial service for James Henry Gibson,61, was held Saturday, October 16th at McFarland Funeral Home Chapel.

He died unexpectantly on October 8th.

His official obituary read as follows:

James Henry Gibson, Sr. was born on June 11th, 1960, to Joe Gibson and Sadie Newell, both of whom preceded him in death. He graduated from Carroll High School in Monroe, Louisiana.

He was a War Veteran who spent 13 years in the United States Army and moved up the ranks. He served in Saudi Arabia in Desert Storm from 1990 to 1991; and played basketball for the Army in several different states and countries.

James was employed at many locations throughout his life, with his most recent employment at Sam’s Club in Monroe, Louisiana for over 15 years. He had a love for fishing, playing dominos, and could make anybody laugh. He always had a positive word and a smile on his face. He was a long-time attendee of the St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church in West Monroe, Louisiana and became a full-fledged member in 2020.

James departed this life unexpectedly on Friday, October 8th, 2021. He has 7 siblings, three brothers of whom preceded him in death, James “Pee Wee” McNair, Ben Gibson, and Johnny “Bug” Gibson. He leaves to cherish his memories: his children, Shantella Williams of Monroe, Louisiana; James (Nicole) Gibson, Jr of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Jamesha (Tillman) Gibson-Watkins of Monroe, Louisiana; and Jametrish Gibson of Monroe, Louisiana. Four sisters, Willie Davis of Jackson, Mississippi; JoAnn Gibson, Ella Gibson, and Sheila Newell, all of Monroe, Louisiana, and a long-time loving partner, Jackie Smith, of Monroe, Louisiana. He loved all his Grandkids and was very close to a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
