Multiple charges filed on suspect for gun threats on Christmas night

A Monroe man was arrested on Christmas night following a heated altercation that escalated to alleged gun threats. The Monroe Police Department responded to a disturbance call on Samuel Drive at approximately 8:30 PM, December 25, 2023.

The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Nicholas McCartery, was involved in a verbal and physical confrontation which led to a series of threatening actions. Reports indicate that the incident began when McCartery, who was asleep at a residence, was awakened by his girlfriend of seven months and informed that he needed to leave the property.

According to eyewitness accounts, an argument ensued as McCartery was exiting the residence. It was during this altercation that McCartery reportedly threatened a victim with a loaded firearm. The victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, claimed McCartery pointed a Ruger 380 handgun at them and threatened their life.

The situation escalated when the victim’s brother-in-law arrived at the scene. He alleged that he witnessed McCartery running from behind the residence and claimed that McCartery pointed the handgun at him as well, issuing a threatening statement.

Upon arrival, Monroe police officers observed the handgun in McCartery’s front pocket. He was promptly taken into custody without further incident. A subsequent search by the officers led to the discovery of a loaded Ruger 380 cal. handgun and a glass pipe, commonly used for smoking methamphetamine, in McCartery’s possession. It was also confirmed that McCartery does not hold a concealed carry permit.

Following his arrest, McCartery was booked into the Ouachita Correctional Center. He faces multiple charges, including Illegal Carry of a Weapon, Domestic Abuse Battery Aggravated Assault, Aggravated Assault with a Firearm, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
