NAACP members across the nation will elect new officers Saturday, thousands of local branches conduct elections for leadership of one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious civil rights organizations.
Locally, the Ouachita Parish Branch will choose from a slate of four candidates for president, two women and two men.
Incumbent president Ambrose Douzart is seeking another two-year term. He is being challenged by Lynetta Whitehurst, the present assistant secretary of the branch, Marie Brown, a local community activist, and Rev. Thaddius Bishop, a former legal redress chairman for the branch.
For the first time, NACCP will cast their ballots electronically by email or a text message that will be sent to each qualified member directly from the National NAACP office.
Internally, the presidential candidates have been waging a full political campaign complete with direct messages, mail-outs, and social media appeals.
