Parish board approves politically charged “Ten Commandments” Posters

In a 6-1 vote Tuesday night, the Ouachita Parish School Board approved a resolution mandating the display of the Ten Commandments in every classroom across the parish.

This directive aligns with guidance from Louisiana Attorney General Elizabeth Murrill under H.B. 71, which requires public schools to post these foundational documents as part of an effort to emphasize historical underpinnings of the American legal system.

Rev. Harold McCoy, the lone Black member of the board, cast the only dissenting vote.

Wednesday, Rev. McCoy told the Free Press of his concerns over separation of church and state and the cultural insensitivity of some posters provided for the mandate.
