Proposed law could send 10 year olds to Angola

Proposed law would expose youth who commit any crime to adult penalties, even prison time. Co-sponsored by North Louisiana Senator Jay Morris

A proposed constitutional amendment approved by the Senate and, waiting approval in the Louisiana House, would open the door for children as young as 10 years old to face adult prison sentences for offenses as minor as petty theft or drug possession.

Broadening the Scope

Senate Bill 2, spearheaded by Senators Heather Cloud (R-Turkey Creek) and Jay Morris (R-North Louisiana), has already cleared the Senate and is poised for debate in the House. The amendment aims to eliminate the current constitutional limits restricting adult prosecution of juveniles to a list of 15 serious offenses, such as murder, rape, and armed robbery.
