Rev. James Smith announces bid for State Senate

Rayville, LA — Reverend James Smith has officially qualified to run for State Senate in District 34, challenging incumbent Sen. Katrina Jackson in the upcoming October election.

Rev. Smith’s candidacy is rooted in a lifetime of experience and passion for education, truancy prevention, faith-based services for underserved areas, and economic revitalization.

As a transformative figure in his role as Economic Development Director for the City of Rayville under Mayor Harry Lewis, Rev. Smith orchestrated significant improvements. His leadership led to a thriving and dynamic Rayville community. The area witnessed projects aimed at modernizing water, sewer, and drainage systems, while also attracting and nurturing local businesses.

Rev. Smith’s vision for Senate District 34 is focused on collaboration with both state and local governments, as well as community leaders. He aims to revitalize the district by addressing pressing issues such as access to clean drinking water, updated sewage and drainage systems, and a modern education system capable of equipping children for the challenges of the 21st century. Additionally, Rev. Smith believes in supporting teachers with the wages they truly deserve.

Reverend James Smith currently serves as the Pastor of Mount Zion Baptist Church. He resides in Rayville alongside his beloved wife, Beverly, with whom he has celebrated over 50 years of marriage.

The election for State Senate, District 34, is scheduled for October 14, 2023, with early voting starting on September 30 and concluding on October 7.
