Supervisors award Posthumous doctorate to Ashely Reed-Maryland

The LSU Board of Supervisors convened on February 21, 2025, to highlight academic advancements and student achievements across the university system. Among the recognitions was the posthumous awarding of degrees to three students, a tribute to their dedication and academic accomplishments despite life’s unforeseen challenges.

One of the honorees was Ashley Reed-Maryland, who was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology posthumously.

Reed-Maryland, 48, passed away in October 2024 following a prolonged illness that interrupted her doctoral studies at Louisiana State University.

A native of Monroe, Louisiana, Reed-Maryland was the beloved daughter of Mr. Matthew and Mrs. Anna Reed, a devoted wife to Antonio Maryland, and the mother of 7-year-old Aiden Maryland.

She was a proud member of Wossman High School’s Class of 1994 and had dedicated years to her academic pursuits, striving to make a meaningful impact through sociology.

Her posthumous degree stands as a testament to her resilience and scholarly commitment.

University officials expressed their hope that the recognition brings a sense of closure and pride to her family.
