Three arrested for Illegal firearm discharge in 4th of July revelry

What began as a festive 4th of July celebration in Monroe quickly took a turn for the worse when the police intervened in response to automated reports of shots fired.

Several young men enjoying the revelry by firing registered weapons into the air in their backyard were met with the swift response of the elite HEAT (High Enforcement and Apprehension Tactics) team, summoned by the city’s Shot Spotter system.

Under city law, it is illegal to discharge firearms within city limits, regardless of the occasion, including holidays such as the 4th of July and New Year’s. Additionally, the use of fireworks is also prohibited within city boundaries.
