Verna Jackson lauded as “Drum major for Jesus” in eulogy

“A drum major for Jesus” was the theme of the homegoing message for Verna Jackson Monday at the Pleasant Green Baptist Church.

   Jackson, 77, died on May 29th.

   In her youth, Jackson was the drum major for the Richwood High School Marching Band, where she received accolades for performing in a role usually reserved for males.

   Jackson spent her adult years living to the beat of a different drummer who was Jesus, said William Smith, pastor of Pleasant Green.

   For decades she was the administrative assistant to the late Perry Thomas, the EEO Officer for the City of Monroe.
