Wossman High elects transgender student to homecoming court

Scheyler Brown, a transgender student at Wossman High School in Monroe, Louisiana, was elected to the homecoming court on May 19, 2023.

She is the first transgender student to be elected to a homecoming court in the city.

Brown, who uses she/her pronouns, was elected as “Miss Purple.” She finished third in the school-wide vote.

 “This is a huge step forward for transgender acceptance in Monroe,” one supporter told the Free Press.

Brown’s election was met with mostly positive reactions from students and staff. However, she did receive a handful of negative comments on her social media page.
