Wossman, Richwood dominate as state basketball championship victors

The city of Monroe and the Town of Richwood are basking in basketball glory as three local high school teams—Wossman High School’s girls and boys teams and Richwood High School’s boys team—claimed state championships in the 2025 Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) basketball tournaments.

The victories, celebrated over the competitions ending March 15, mark a historic triumph for the region, with two titles heading to Wossman and one to Richwood, showcasing Monroe’s dominance on the hardwood. All three teams comprising the Highway 165 “championship alley.”

Wossman Girls

The Wossman High School girls’ basketball team secured their 4th back to back crown in the Division II Non-Select bracket, continuing their reign as a powerhouse in Louisiana girls’ basketball.

Facing off against a determined Albany High School squad in the championship game on March 7th, the Lady Wildcats delivered a commanding performance, winning 62-25.

Led by standout players Ramiah Augurson and Anyra Wilson—both recently named to the LHSCA/LHSBCA All-Star team—Wossman’s relentless defense and sharp shooting overwhelmed their opponents.

Coach Otis Robinson, who celebrated his 100th career win earlier this season, praised his team’s focus and resilience.

“This group has heart and determination,” Robinson said postgame. “They’ve worked for this moment all year.”

Wossman Boys

Not to be outdone, the Wossman High School boys’ team also etched their name in the history books, capturing the Division II Non-Select boys’ title with a victory over the Bossier Bearkats. The Wildcats, under the guidance of Coach Casey Jones, clinched their second consecutive championship with a hard-fought win 50-44 win on Saturday, March 15th.

Tournament MVP Zion Weeks proved instrumental, with his clutch plays—including a steal and lay-up in a key moment—securing the victory. “Back-to-back titles mean everything to us,” Jones said. “These kids play with pride for Monroe.” The win capped a season of redemption for Wossman, who bounced back from an overtime loss to Richwood earlier in the year to claim the Don Redden Tournament and, ultimately, the state crown.

Richwood Boys

Adding to Monroe’s haul, the Richwood High School boys’ team emerged victorious in their own state championship showdown against Marksville High School, 85-67.

Under the steady leadership of Head Coach Terry Martin, the Rams showcased their dominance throughout the game, pulling away in the second half to secure the win.

The victory ended a 13-year championship drought for Richwood, whose last title came in 2012 under Martin’s guidance, but marks the school’s 6th state championship in its history and third championship for Coach Martin

The win solidifies his legacy as one of Louisiana’s most successful high school basketball coaches.

“Championship Alley”

The triple crown for Monroe sparked jubilation across the region, with fans flooding social media to celebrate the achievements, hailing the triple victories as a testament to the region’s basketball prowess, noting that Monroe-Richwood is the basketball capital of Louisiana right now, all located on Highway 165 which has earned the name “Championship Alley.”

The championships were finalized at Southeastern Louisiana University Center in Hammond, where the LHSAA hosted its “Marsh Madness” tournament from March 3 to March 8, and the boys’ and girls’ finals extended into the following week.

For Wossman, the dual championships add to an already storied legacy. The girls’ team notched their 4th straight title, and the boys’ repeat victory reinforces their status as a perennial contender.

Richwood’s win, meanwhile, signals a resurgence for the Rams, who have battled fierce competition from their crosstown rivals all season.
