Greetings in the Name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!
While driving through our communities, I have noticed several signs and advertisements on church campuses announcing upcoming Vacation Bible Schools (VBS) scheduled to take place during various times throughout the summer months. These signs serve as reminders that while school may be out for the summer, opportunities for spiritual growth are still very much alive. In fact, during a recent conversation with one parent, she shared that she intentionally tries to schedule as many VBS opportunities as possible for her children to ensure they have meaningful activities during the summer, especially opportunities to learn the Bible.
With that in mind, I was delighted to be invited to attend VBS at Greater New Beginnings Christian Ministry in Rayville, Louisiana, under the leadership of Pastor Harold McCoy. It was by far one of the most rewarding Christian education experiences I have enjoyed in a long time, largely because of the enthusiasm and excitement displayed by the children throughout the week.
During the week, as announced by the pastor, approximately 108 participants gathered each evening to learn more about Jesus. Ministry volunteers faithfully served as greeters, teachers, van drivers, meal preparers, and workers behind the scenes to ensure that every aspect of the Christ-centered school operated smoothly.
The theme for the week was “Illumination Station: Jesus Is the Light-Learn It, Live It, Shine It.” One of the most inspiring sights each evening was watching the children arrive and eagerly gather in the sanctuary while waiting to be dismissed to their classes. Their excitement and anticipation were contagious.
I thoroughly enjoyed the adult class as Pastor McCoy delved deeply into the Word of God. His teaching was insightful and biblically sound. We were provided opportunities to strengthen our understanding of Scripture. However, the most rewarding aspect of the week was witnessing lives being transformed. Pastor McCoy extended the invitation each night, and several children accepted Christ as their Savior and the following Sunday, they publicly demonstrated their faith through baptism. Seeing children come to Christ brings to mind the words of Jesus in Mark 10:14 (KJV),“Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.”
Although VBS for children was established many years ago in 1894 by Mrs. Walker Aylett Hawes of Epiphany Baptist Church in New York City, it has grown into a cherished ministry in churches across the nation. Interesting, today VBS is designed to continue to teach God’s Word and build community. As I reflect on my experience at Greater New Beginnings, I cannot help but wonder what impact would be made if this type of Christian education extended beyond one week each summer. I believe the results would be truly phenomenal.
Let us “Thank God for Vacation Bible Schools!” They continue to brighten the hearts of young people while pointing them to Jesus Christ, who is the Light of the World.
