This past Saturday was a wonderful day in the Booker T. Addition in which several community committed citizens braved the heat to participate in cultivating the current community garden. In addition to creating an environment for produce, people connect with nature, meet neighbors, and build relationships. Communities throughout the country are looking for ways to improve their environment. The community gardens enhance the local community by providing green space and beautifying neighborhoods.
When the Booker T. Community Garden was started a few years ago, many came to participate. However, the excitement appeared to wear off. I can truly say that we are back on track because of some committed individuals willing to see the results of their labor. I am proud to be a part of this effort. Still, I would be remiss if I didn’t salute Pam Saulsberry, Rep. Adrian Fisher, Marshal Robert Cherry, Jamie Mayes, Eugene Whitney, Chris Gallow, Robert “Truck” Johnson, and City Council Rep. Juanita Woods.
The late Esther Gallow was instrumental in leading the efforts in helping to revitalize the Booker T. Addition, and we all think it is fitting to name the garden, “The Esther Gallow Community Garden-Park.” She loved this community and spent a lot of time organizing individuals and seeking financial support to assist in this cause. We are asking individuals, businesses, groups, clubs, churches, organizations, and especially elected officials to support our efforts financially. After all, we should always Love where we Live and Live where we Love.
