With Wossman High School’s homecoming game scheduled for Friday night, local sports officials, parents, and fans are left bracing for the impact of a violent postgame melee that occurred hundreds of miles away in Assumption Parish.
The fallout from last week’s game between Carroll High School and Assumption High School now threatens to disrupt the local high school football calendar, while raising urgent questions across Ouachita Parish about student safety, law enforcement tactics, and travel security.
At the center of immediate concern is the status of Friday’s matchup between Carroll and Wossman. Should the Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) hand down severe administrative penalties—such as forcing Carroll to forfeit remaining games—Wossman’s homecoming celebration could be upended without a visiting opponent.
Beyond game schedules, community members and parents are demanding answers on several fronts:
- Deployment of Force: Community members are questioning why Assumption Parish deputies utilized tasers on high school students during the postgame chaos.
- Travel Security Protocols: Questions are mounting over why Monroe City Schools did not have dedicated district security traveling with Carroll, especially given the high-stakes nature of away games and the program’s past disciplinary history.
- Safety Concerns: Reports of escalating crowds have raised anxiety over whether threats of gun violence were present, leaving neighboring school officials uneasy about upcoming events.
How the Incident Unfolded
Local concern stems from a chaotic scene after Assumption’s 14–6 victory over Carroll in Napoleonville. Tensions simmered early when officials ejected several players from both teams for unsportsmanlike conduct, forcing them to separate the teams during postgame handshakes.
The situation worsened near the stadium exits when a group of Carroll players charged a gate near the home stands after spectators allegedly threw debris at them from the stands. Bystander video showed uniformed Carroll players engaging in physical altercations with Assumption fans. Responding Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office (APSO) deputies deployed tasers to disperse the crowd, leaving several individuals with minor cuts and scrapes.

APSO confirmed that Assumption High players remained on the field under coaching supervision and were not involved in the fight.
As of Monday, criminal charges for disturbing the peace are pending against one Carroll High player and an Assumption fan. APSO spokespersons noted that investigators continue to review video evidence and expect additional charges or arrests.
LHSAA Review & Historical Precedent
The LHSAA has launched a formal investigation into the brawl and requires written reports from the Monroe City School Board, Carroll High School, and Assumption High School.
“The LHSAA is committed to promoting sportsmanship on and off the field before, during and after every contest,” the association stated. “As an organization, we will continue to emphasize the importance of sportsmanship and will not tolerate unsportsmanlike conduct by student-athletes, coaches, administrators or fans.”
In a statement, Monroe City Schools stated: “The safety of our students is our first responsibility. District leadership is gathering information from school administration, staff, law enforcement, and others who were present to establish a complete and accurate understanding of what occurred… If a review finds failures in school-level procedures or areas where additional safeguards are needed, they will be addressed.”
The pending LHSAA decision carries heavy implications for Carroll due to past precedent. In October 2022, an altercation in the press box during a game against Franklin Parish High School resulted in criminal charges against Carroll coaches. That incident led to $2,500 in fines and season-ending suspensions for eight coaching staff members while the team sat at 7–0.
With Carroll scheduled to host its own homecoming the following week, the high school football community now awaits the LHSAA’s final findings to see how hard the penalties will land—and who else will be caught in the crossfire.
