Bulldog Determination

By Rusty Potter

When you set out to achieve a dream or accomplish a goal, there will always be obstacles. Some are visible, such as financial struggles, limited resources, and closed doors. Others are invisible – fear, doubt, or the nagging voices of people who say it cannot be done. In those moments, success doesn’t go to the fastest or the strongest, but to the one who refuses to let go. That’s what I call Bulldog Determination.
If you’ve ever seen a bulldog hold on to something, you know its reputation for having an unshakeable grip. Once it bites down, it is almost impossible to make it let go. That same quality, redirected into human ambition, is what separates those who almost make it from those who actually cross the finish line.

The truth is, life will test your willpower. You will hear “no” more often than you hear “yes.” You will have days when you feel like giving up, when progress seems slow, and your dreams feel far away. That’s when you need to reach deep inside and hold on tighter. Too many people quit when they were just inches away from a breakthrough. Too many dreams die, not because they were not possible, but because someone let go too soon.

Think about some of the most successful people in history. They were not always the smartest or the most gifted. They were the ones who refused to quit. Thomas Edison failed thousands of times before he perfected the light bulb. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team. What made the difference? Determination. A relentless refusal to let go of the vision burning inside of them.
You might not be inventing electricity or aiming for the NBA. But maybe you’re trying to finish school while working a job. Maybe you are building a business, raising children, or working to improve your health. Whatever your mountain is, it requires the same grit. You need grit so strong that setbacks only make you stronger.

Here’s the secret: determination is muscle. The more you use it, the stronger it gets. Each time you face an obstacle and push through, your determination grows. Each time you refuse to quit, you build endurance for the next challenge.

Next time you feel like letting go, remember the bulldog. Clamp down on your dream and refuse to release it, no matter how hard life shakes you. Success does not always come to the most talented; it comes to the most determined.

Your future belongs to you. Don’t let go!
