Scripture: And let the peace of God rule in your heart, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in Psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your heart to the Lord. And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him (Colossians 3:15-17).
Approximately twenty-four years ago, a lady was delegated by God to serve as his guest speaker during the annual Dr. MLK Day Program held at the Civic Center in Monroe, Louisiana. It was thought by many in attendance that she would spend the allotted time praising the many God designed and propelled accomplishments of Dr. King as is the custom of some speakers throughout the nation for this special occasion. However, to the dismay and amazement of some of the program planners, participants, and attendees, God had instructed her not to let his message focus on his accomplishments carried out by Dr. King in the past, but on his present and future plans for his people today. However, the opening of the program was greatly marred due to its starting very late. Many people left before its beginning including some members of the news media.
Rev. Roosevelt Wright, Jr., owner of the Monroe Free Press remained and the coverage from his newspaper was completely accurate. Coverage by another local newspaper reporter was embarrassingly inaccurate. She placed front column center what she considered to be the usual battle-cry during Dr. King’s celebration programs-that is the decry of inequities and indignations continually suffered by African-Americans and demands for much needed improvements of our quality of life in all areas. Had she remained, she would not have thrown all of us in the same hat. However, there is a great possibility she had to provide coverage for another event and would have been late or missed it all together.
The subject of the speaker’s God-given message was based on his admonishing his people to be more grateful to him for blessings bestowed upon them and others. His focus was not on race, color or creed. He also wanted all of us to know that because soooo many of us are sinful and disrespectful toward him and others, He has started withdrawing many of the blessings he has already given us and those he had planned to give us and our posterity, also.
Well, my friends, let us fast forward twenty-plus years to our present moment. It appears to this writer that God’s message and warnings are becoming a reality. Instead of his blessings and improvements of our quality of life we have been requesting and receiving from him (all blessings are from him), they have begun to de-escalate at an alarming rate and will continue to decline. This writer wishes she could give you hope for better days in the future, but know that they will never improve but continue to worsen as long as we remain sinful and disrespectful toward him and others.
The only hope we have is for those of us who accept salvation through his dear only begotten son, Jesus Christ. God Bless!
By the way, the lady who spoke at the Dr. King Program was Jacquelyn Simmons.
