“If it had not been for the Lord…”

By: Lisa Wilmore

Scripture: If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, now may Israel say, If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, when men rose up against us: Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us: Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul: Then the proud waters had gone over our soul. Blessed be the LORD, who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth. Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers. The snare is broken and we are escaped. Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth (Psalm 124).

My Dear Friends,

Please allow me to bless the name of the Lord from whom all blessings flow. As the senior saints say “It’s another day’s journey, and I’m glad about it.” He kept me from mine enemies and protected me from danger. My testimony on today is, “If it had not been for the Lord on my side…”

Psalm’s familiar Biblical quotes: “In my distress, I cried unto the Lord and He heard me…” (Psalms 120:1); “I will lift up my eyes to the hill, from whence cometh my help…”(Psalm 121:1); “I was glad when they said unto me, let us go into the house of the Lord…” (Psalms 122:1); “ Unto thee I lift up mine eyes…” ( Psalms 123:1); “If it had not been for the Lord on our side…” (Psalm 124:1a);…; etc.

Our highlighted text for this message, Psalm 124, is one of the Songs of degrees or ascents (going up) that was sang by the children of Israel during their suggested journeys. Scholars suggest that the Israelites sang Psalms 120 -124 for the following reasons: 1) As they ascended from Babylon to Jerusalem, 2) It refers to the 15 steps of the temple on which worshipers sang these hymns, 3) The three year trip that every male made to Jerusalem for the great annual feasts of Passover, Pentecost, and Tabernacle (Biblical Comments).

For the most part, Psalm 124 was sung as the Israelites reflect on how God delivered them from the hand of the enemies. Not only has God delivered the Israelites from the enemies’ hand, He has delivered us from those who wish to devour us, also. What is your mode of reflection on how God delivered you from your adversaries’ hand?

As we look back over our lives and see how God protected us, we too can say” If it had not been for the Lord on our side…”
