People in Monroe are still reeling over the failed 2 Renewal tax propositions that occurred on May 16th. The Monroe City School system has 83% of its enrollment of black students. It has been noted that there were enough black voters to pass the propositions, however, several reasons have been documented. Voters throughout the state of Louisiana voted against all 5 of the amendments that were on the ballot. Many of these voters in Monroe voted against the propositions as well. Some admitted that they were confused. Others were intentional in voting against the propositions because they were angry over personalities in addition to several decisions made by the administration. Also, the Neville High School supporters were upset because the school board voted against them to start a Charter School?
Regardless of why the majority of the voters decided not to renew the 2 tax propositions, our children, teachers, and support personnel are suffering. As the community is starting to regroup, it is time to get behind Superintendent Sam Moore and the Monroe City School board to vote to pass these 2 Renewal propositions when they are placed back on the ballot for the later part of 2026. Surely, there will continue to be concerns of affordability and government accountability, and rightfully so. However, let’s put our focus on our children so that they can receive the best education possible. When this happens, we can continue to Love where we Live and Live where we Love.
