Sarah Smith named Hearing Judge for local court

Monroe attorney Sarah Smith has been appointed to serve as a Hearing Officer Judge for the 4th District Court, where she will preside over cases involving child support, domestic abuse, protective order enforcement, and juvenile traffic matters.

Smith, the daughter of the former City Judge Dr. James Garland Smith, has been practicing law privately in Monroe. Her appointment marks a new chapter in a career that has included both private practice and public service.

In 2024, Smith began her public service as a member of the Southside Economic Development District (SEDD), representing District 4. She was elected vice president of the SEDD earlier this year in May. On Tuesday, she formally notified City Councilman Rev. Rodney McFarland of her resignation from the SEDD board due to her judicial appointment.

As a Hearing Officer Judge, Smith’s rulings will be subject to appeal before the 4th District Court of Appeal, ensuring judicial oversight remains in place.

In training at present, Smith is expected to assume her new duties in October.
