A thermometer simply reflects the temperature of a room. The thermometer only gives information about the current situation. It is designed to react to what is currently happening. The thermostat, on the other hand regulates the environment. The thermostat initiates the action to control the temperature. The thermostat is intelligent in the sense it’s always monitoring the environment, and if the temperature gets too hot or cold, it decides what to do to correct the situation.
We can not afford to be a thermometer: “Do not conform any longer to the patterns of this world “ (Romans 12:2). Jesus wanted His disciples to be in the world, but not of the world, that they would be thermostats, not thermometers. Don’t just reflect the culture of your surroundings. Instead, set the direction, set the pace, the culture, and the standards for your life.
